My background truly lends itself to being able to offer some pointers about small business in general and home-based business in particular.

Like many of you, over the years, I completed college, tried my hand at different things and was always interested in finding a way to improve my income so I could achieve the lifestyle I wanted to have.

I made mistakes along the way, but always sought to do things with a sincere integrity whether I was working in an IT role, running an insurance agency or providing assistance to home-based business professionals.

My goal has always been to constantly improve myself, services and products I provide and therefore become more successful. I discovered some simple truths about fundamentals that will never go out of style: more on that later.

Like many of you, I've invested in just about every online marketing course that was available and also have tried out various services and software in an attempt to see if they worked as advertised.

As a result of trying out various online marketing products, and my failures and successes, I think I'm in a position to offer real-world based observations regarding what works and what doesn't and I'd like to share some of the more helpful things with you.

As a result, I'll hope you'll pickup some helpful ideas and pointers about how to best go about promoting your services so you can be in a position to succeed.

The good news is that there are tools and methods you can leverage to make life easier as a small or home-based business (HBB) operator. I plan to comment on some various products and tools you can use to build your business - tools that will hopefully save you time and at least money.

My next post will seek to help you establish your own personal foundation for success for the HBB operator; we'll begin with establishing a realistic view of what it takes to succeed and by working towards having a mindset that will make a big difference in being prepared for success.

I'll attempt to follow the 'Keep It Simple Rule' so we can avoid some the confusion that would otherwise exist when tackling the subjects involved with finding, starting, and running a successful home-based business.

Recently I noticed someone was promoting a small business success 'kit.'

Naturally, I wondered what should be in such a kit and even if buying a kit would be the place to start. Having read the advice of small business and home-based business gurus and having chatted with coaches and yes, even a psychologist, my point of view about what is needed to succeed is likely to vary from those who are selling kits.

The place to start is to ask yourself one simple question and it's this: "Is a home-based business going to be right for me?" In other words, do you think you have what it takes to succeed as an independent business person?

The ONE Big Thing Business People Need to Have

People who have worked with successful home business operators and with those who started a small business mostly agree that the single most important element a prospective business owner
needs is that of PERSISTENCE.

This is a quality that you can't buy or lease. It's an internal quality that will help you keep going no matter what obstacles you encounter and one that you'll need if you are going to succeed.

If you're the type of person who tends to follow-through and find a way to make things happen you might have the right amount of persistence. I tend to think that those who are stubbornly insistent about getting things done have the very same quality - it's just another way of looking at it.

But, make no mistake, if you are to succeed, the most important intrinsic quality you can have going for you is that of persistence. The good news is that this quality can be cultivated and I would tend to think it will be worthwhile to have. You can strengthen this quality by getting in the habit of always following through and finishing tasks no matter if you run into obstacles.

Establishing strong constructive habits like completing tasks will see you through and help you become successful far more than purchasing any type of business kit. Just MHO.

It's likely you'll have some food for thought after reading the next article as we'll get down to brass tacks and take a look at how you can start a home business. In the meantime, you can get a head start by starting to think a little bit about what you're truly interested in. That's the teaser but it is a good starting point - without a doubt!

Stay tuned.

In the previous blog comment, I mentioned a quality that one needs to have if you want to start and run your own business successfully; and that quality is simply *persistence*.

Assuming you have that quality, you can likely throwout your concerns about whether you have what it takes and its very likely that you don't worry about taking personality profile tests and all of that because you can acquire knowledge and skills if they are needed. The bottom line: PERSISTENCE is King

Next Step

You may not be suprised to learn that doing a little homework and stopping to think about what it takes to succeed in any venture in a good starting point and it's also an excellent place to begin if you're thinking about starting a business. The very next thing to consider, if you are to be motivated over the long term, is to think about your INTERESTS.

  • What are you truly interested in?
  • What do you like? What do you do and read about in your spare time?
  • What fantasies do you entertain - no, not that kind - when you have a quite moment and think about what you would be doing if you could do anything at all?

See where this is going? The reason for this line of thought is to simply get a sense of what you're interested in and then perhaps make of list of those things and then think about areas of interest that might be involved in providing a service or product. There are no right or wrong answers at this point in time - just look at this as a fun excercise you're doing just for you.

The next step is to think about what you could do with your interests.

For example, if you're interested in travel, do you think you might find a way to provide travel information in a form that you could market? That's just one example of course. But you get the idea.

You might want to take some time with this as this is really a time when you can engage in a little introspection and think in terms of your heart's desire. The reason for doing this is best explained by an idea I picked up from Rush Limbaugh. As it turns out, both he and Zig Ziglar have something in common. They both suggest that if you follow your passion in life and find a way to build a business or service around what you're interested in, you're much more likely to enjoy success.

In the next post, we'll take a look at how to determine if your interests (and ideas) have practical application in terms of starting a business. Then, we'll also look at some different types of business so you can work on the big picture and place some things in the right context.

And, understanding that some will have more urgent need to get things going, we'll take a look at some ways you can generate exra income without going through all the traditional business steps that aren't likely to work so well today anyway.

Until later and remember to stay tuned.
